Howard R. Greene, M.A., M.Ed.
President and Founder

Howard Greene is the President of Howard Greene & Associates, the nation's leading independent educational consulting company, which he founded in 1968. Howard received his Bachelor's Degree from Dartmouth College in 1959, and holds a Master's Degree, with honors in American Studies from New York University, as well as a Master's Degree in Education from Harvard University. He is a former Princeton University admission officer and member of the Faculty Board of Advisors. Howard has counseled thousands of students over close to forty years, and has consulted to numerous schools, colleges, and corporations. He has written many books on planning for college and graduate school, including Scaling the Ivy Wall, Beyond the Ivy Wall, and The Select. He and his son, Matthew Greene, are the co-authors of several books in the Greenes' Guides to Educational Planning Series, published by HarperCollins; Making it into a Top College; Inside the Top Colleges; The Hidden Ivies; The Public Ivies: Making it into a Top Graduate School; and Presenting Yourself Successfully. They also co-authored Paying for College; published by St. Martins Press, and their most recent book, The Greenes' Guide to Boarding Schools published by Thomson Petersons. Howard has appeared on the Today Show, CNBC, Good Morning America, CNN and other media to discuss relevant educational issues and trends. He has been profiled in The New York Times, the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine, and People Magazine, and is frequently interviewed by national news outlets. Howard and Matthew are co-hosts of two PBS television programs, "Ten Steps to College with the Greenes" and "Paying for College with the Greenes." They have written a national bi-monthly column for Knight Ridder-Tribune News Service and are regular contributors to University Business Magazine. Howard is a Trustee of the Choate Rosemary School and the Wilton Public Library, and is a member of the National Advisory Board of the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. He is a past Trustee of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, A Better Chance, Inc., and the New Canaan Country School, and is a former President of the Dartmouth Class of 1959. He has recently been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Humanities Council, the State Branch of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and to the National Advisory Council of the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University.

Matthew W. Greene, Ph.D.
Educational Director

Dr. Matthew Greene is Educational Director of Howard Greene & Associates. He holds a Bachelor's Degree from Dartmouth College, (1990), where he majored in history modified with government. He earned both his Master's Degree in Public Policy in 1993, and his Doctorate in Political Science in 1997, from the University of Colorado at Boulder. His graduate work focused on education policy making, the structure of public school systems, and school discipline and violence. Matthew's professional experience includes teaching and counseling university undergraduates, and training graduate level teachers. He has interned at the United States Information Agency and the U.S. Department of Education, and has consulted to the Education Commission of the States. He is the author of Learning about School Violence: Peter Lang Publishers, 2001, and is co-author with his father, Howard Greene, of the books in the Greenes' Guides to Educational Planning Series, published by HarperCollins: Making it into a Top College; Inside the Top Colleges; The Hidden Ivies; The Public Ivies; Making it into A Top Graduate School; and Presenting Yourself Successfully. They also co-authored Paying for College, published by St. Martins Press, and their most recent book, the Greenes' Guide to Boarding Schools, published by Thomson Petersons. He serves on the Boards of the Family and Children's Agency in Norwalk, CT, the Dartmouth Partners in Community Service Program, and Suffield Academy. He joined Howard Greene & Associates in 1997.

Ginger F.C. Miller, M.R.E.
Director, New York Office

Ginger Miller joined Howard Greene & Associates as Director of the New York office in the summer of 2000. Prior to joining HGA, Ginger had spent all of her professional life working in colleges and universities. As Associate Director of Admissions at Dartmouth College (1993-2000), and at Bryn Mawr College (1989-1993), she was responsible for every major facet of the admission process. She has traveled widely throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, working closely with both public and independent schools regarding admission candidates and issues, and has had special responsibility and oversight for candidates from New England, New York and the Northwest. She is an active participant in various professional organizations, and is a frequent presenter at seminars and other educational forums. Earlier in her career, she worked as a research assistant at Yale University, and later at Hamilton College where she was the Director of Critical Languages Program. While at Hamilton, she developed and established language programs working closely with professors of Cornell and Colgate Universities, and City College. For a number of years, she was a consultant to Grinnell College when the college began its Alternate Language Study Option. She completed her undergraduate education at Tufts University. Ginger's keen insight into students, and her compassion for their needs at all levels of their education is directly related to her many years of professional admissions work, and to her masters level training at New York Theological Seminary.

Kenneth H. Magrath, Ph.D.
Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Magrath became affiliated with Howard Greene & Associates in 1997, and sees clients in both our Westport, CT and New York City offices. A clinical psychologist licensed in Connecticut and New York, he received a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Ripon College and both his Masters and Doctorate degrees from Syracuse University. Dr. Magrath was awarded both pre- and post- doctoral fellowships at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. He has served on the faculties of the Cornell University Medical College, and New York Medical School. Dr. Magrath's professional focus includes the assessment of cognitive and learning styles and career and academic coaching based on assessment results. He has published his work in the areas of assessment, coaching and counseling in the professional literature, and is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Society of Industrial/Organizational Psychologists.

Don Betterton, M.A.
Director, Princeton Office

Having served for 30 years as Director of Financial Aid for Princeton University, Don Betterton joined Howard Greene & Associates in 2006 as Director of the newly opened Princeton, NJ office. Don has an extensive college admissions background, and was a long-time member of Princeton's admissions committee. His experience includes enrollment management consulting at more than 30 colleges, and he has personally counseled many individual families concerning admission issues. He is a magna cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College and received a Masters Degree from Rutgers University. Don was the architect of financial aid policies at Princeton, which have come to be regarded as the preeminent financial aid approach for colleges nation-wide. In recognition of his accomplishments in the financial aid field, he was recently made a member of the National Association of Certified College Planners. Don was a Trustee of the College Board, chaired the Policy Committee of the Consortium on Financing Higher Education, and was named to the College Scholarship Service Hall of Fame in 2004. Howard Greene & Associates is pleased to respond to the growing need of families and clients by opening a new regional office in Princeton, and to welcome Don as its new Director. The addition of his financial aid expertise will further enrich our established programs of counseling and consulting.

Frederick C. Calder, Ed.M.
Senior Associate for Consulting to Independent Schools

Frederick Calder is Senior Associate for Consulting to Independent Schools at Howard Greene & Associates. He was educated at Harvard University where he received the A.B. and Ed.M. degrees. Fred was Executive Director of the New York State Association of Independent Schools from 1986 to 2007, and in 1997-98 served also as Interim Head of The Ethical Culture Fieldston School in New York. He began his administrative career as headmaster of The Town School in New York City, then served for sixteen years as Headmaster of Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia. Fred has written widely on all aspects of independent schools, their management and character. He has consulted extensively with boards of trustees, heads and others on leadership issues, good practice, the politics of education and organizational structure. A long time trustee and Chairman of the Board of The Northwood School, he is currently Treasurer of the Placid Lake Foundation, and President of The Lake Placid Education Foundation. Fred is a member of The Headmasters Association of the United States, Country Day School Headmasters Association, and the Headmistresses Association of the East.

David S. Scotch, M.S., M.D.
Medical School Counselor

Dr. David Scotch joined Howard Greene & Associates in 2003, as a specialist in medical school counseling. For many years, David was associated with the New York University School of Medicine and Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs. His academic responsibilities included directing the Graduate Medical Education Programs of the Medical Center. Dr. Scotch received his A.B. from Boston University, and his M.D. from New York University School of Medicine. He also holds a Masters of Science Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was a Sloan Fellow at the Sloan School of Management. Dr. Scotch works exclusively with our graduate medical school applicants, counseling them on what to expect from medical school, and how best to prepare for medical school without sacrificing a balanced college education. His counseling expertise also includes how to prepare for the MCAT's, which medical schools an applicant should consider, and how to handle medical school applications, essays, and interviews.
